Whitesburg Schools PTA Bylaws Update

One requirement of a PTA is a regular update and approval of our organization’s bylaws. We’ve discussed and made minor changes during our PTA board meetings and are now presenting the updated bylaws for our membership to look over before we call for a vote of approval at the International Fair on March 19th.

Visit our Book Fair – 10/21 – 10/25

Whitesburg will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair next week, Monday, October 21 through Friday, October 25 during school hours.

The book fair will be OPEN LATE on Monday, October 21 during the Fall Festival (6pm – 8pm).

Students have the opportunity to visit the book fair as a class to preview book fair items and to write a wish list that will come home with them. Wish lists are just that, wishes! They give you an opportunity to discuss what your student saw at fair and decide if you’d like to make any purchases. Students generally shop the fair in the second half of the week.

Our teachers also make wish lists! If you’d like to purchase a book to donate to your student’s classroom library, a book fair volunteer can help them make a selection with the money you send in. We’ll also include a “Donated By” inscription, so your student can leave a legacy of being a reader in their classroom.

Speaking of volunteers, parent volunteers play an essential role in a successful book fair. We need Preview Assistants at the beginning of the week to help students write their wish lists, and we need Shopping Assistants at the end of the week to help students make their selections and remain within their budget. Please contact our librarian, Mrs. Wolfe, to volunteer.

When students shop they can use cash, check, or the recently introduced the e-wallet option. There is no tax added to book fair purchases, so cash and checks can be sent in exact amounts. If you’d like to try the eWallet option, you create an account at home and add funds, then your child is able to access those funds when they shop. From the website:

“When you create an eWallet, the amount you select as your student’s spending limit will appear as a temporary hold (or pending charge) on your credit card and will be reflected in your available balance. You will only be charged for what is purchased, and after the book fair ends, the hold will expire and the funds will be released back to your credit card.”

This is a great option if you don’t want your child to bring cash to school.

Learn more about the eWallet and other book fair information on our book fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/whitesburgp8

Fall Festival Volunteers Needed!

The Whitesburg Fall Festival is October 21 (rain or shine!), and we need volunteers to help make this event a success!

If you’re able to volunteer your time, we will need a set-up crew from 3:00-6:00, booth volunteers from 6:00-8:00 (in 1 hour shifts), and the all-important clean-up crew from 8:00-8:45. Booth volunteers are critical as they’ll be running the (simple!) games and handing out prizes. Booth volunteers are organized in two shifts so volunteers will be able to man a booth and still enjoy the festival with their families

We are also still in need of supply donations. We’ve split items up by grade level to coordinate with the grade-level sponsored booth, but please feel free to donate in any area.

Pre-K: Smarties
Kindergarten: Dum Dum Suckers
1st Grade: Swedish Fish
2nd Grade: Skittles
3rd Grade: 2 Liter bottle of Soda
4th Grade: Air Heads
5th Grade: Bag of Tootsie Rolls
6th Grade:  Snack Cakes
7th Grade: Starbursts
8th Grade: Laffy Taffy

Additional candy needs include: Jolly Ranchers, Twizzlers, and Nerds

Please see the sign up genius and sign up to help where you’re able!

What’s for lunch?

Both Whitesburg Elementary School and Whitesburg Middle School participate in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), which is a USDA program that allows the school to serve free breakfast and lunch to all students. Breakfasts are served in the classroom to all students. Students who choose to eat school lunch will input their code after picking up their tray. Monthly menus can be found on the Huntsville City Schools website (along with other nutrition program information). Lunch menus can also be viewed through the EZ School Lunch App, which can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play.

PTA Delivers Supplies for Teachers

This year our PTA helped our teacher’s start the year off right with donations of needed school supplies. Each teacher was able to put an order in for $75 worth of supplies, which PTA Board members delivered to their classrooms over the past several days. This effort is just one of the things that your PTA membership supports. Thank you!

Welcome to the Whitesburg Schools PTA!

The 2019-2020 school year will bring a lot of changes to Whitesburg. What was formerly Whitesburg P-8 will now be two distinct schools: Whitesburg Elementary School and Whitesburg Middle School. The Whitesburg Schools PTA will remain one organization that serves both schools. In this year of change we look forward to revisiting old traditions and creating new ones. Please join us as a member of our PTA! We look forward to a great year.
